Degenerative joint disease (DJD) is a degeneration of cartilage in elderly dogs. It starts with the loss of matrix and progresses to fissuring, fibrillation, erosion of cartilage, subchondral sclerosis, osteophyte production, and mild synovial inflammation. In the case of the elbow the cause of DJD is not a traumatic or septic damage but elbow dysplasia.
