The authors -on the basis of data in literature- summarise the ethiology and pathogenesis of hip displasia and analyse the inadequacy of standard diagnostic method. They describe the essence of PennHip-method, the way of taking and calculating the compression and distraction index and the evaluation of the results. They briefly mention the other diagnostic methods (Ortolani-test, ultrasound examination and blood test) as well.
