[Effect of straw of corn as substitution of native grass on body weight gain of local sheep]

Straw of corn is by-product consisting of corn stem, dried and fresh leaves that could be used as animal fed. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effect of straw of corn as substitution of native grass on body weight gain of local sheep. The benefit of this experiment was to looking for the best level of straw of corn giving the highest body weight gain of local sheep. In this experiment, five local sheep had been used with 6-8 months of ages. The experimental design used in this experiment was Latin square with five treatments and five replications. Treatment diets consisted of diet as follow: A (100 percent native grass), B (75 percent native grass + 25 percent straw), C (50 percent native grass + 50 percent straw), D (25 percent native grass + 75 percent straw), E (100 percent straw). Each treatment contained concentrate consisting of: 100 gr by-product of milling + 75 gr corn + 50 gr waste coconut + 25 gr soybean meal. Native grass, concentrate and water were available ad libitum. Data were analysed base on Latin Square design. The results of this experiment showed that effect of treatments were not significantly different on body weight gain and feed intake. Conclusion of this research showed that the best diet level was diet B (75 percent native grass + 25 percent straw of corn)
