Upland rice contributes only a small percentage to national rice production. Low yield of upland rice (usually 1/3 of flooded rice yield) is one of the factors causing the small contributions. Even though the upland rice yield has tended to increase in the past, it does not necessarily increase every year. It indicates that technology in upland rice production still need to be improved. Although calcium has allready widely been applied in agricultural practices, mainly to increase soil pH, its roles as a plant nutrition, especially in paddy rice, have not been well published. Some of experimental results indicate that calcium influences yield and growth components, and eating quality as well. The contradictive results occurred can be caused by different rice variety, method of application, and local environment. This paper discusses the possibility of calcium for increasing production quality of upland rice
