Effects of the addition of animal manures on population of microorganisms in soil

A study to determine the effects of incorporating the different organic manures into soil for varying periods on soil microbial populations was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Science of Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Horticulture, University of Melbourne. Chicken manure and cow manure incubated for 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months were used in this study. The results showed that the addition of animal manures both chicken and cow manures enhanced soil microbial populations. Chicken-manure promoted the highest populations of actinomycetes and bacteria compared to unamended soil and cow manure mixture. The population of fungi was more abundant in cow-manure than that in chicken-manure
