The experiment was conducted in Kecamatan Cibarusah, Bekasi, West Java, during the 1995/1996 wet season. The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate performances of four rice varieties planted in direct seeded system, in three different row distances. The experiment was arranged in a split plot design, with three replications. Four varieties of rice i.e.: IR64, Memberamo, Cibodas, and Bengawan Solo were placed as main plots. The sub plots consisted of distance between the rows treatments i.e.: 20 cm, 30 cm, 40 cm, and transplanted rice (25 cm x 20 cm). Fifty kilograms dry seed of rice per hectare was applied and 150 kgs of urea + 125 kgs of SP-36 + 100 kgs of KCl/ha were used as basic fertilizer. The results showed that there were no interaction between varieties and row distance of direct seeded rice tested. Flowering stage, tiller numbers, plant dry weight and leaf area index increased significantly using 20 cm row distance. But these good characteristics did not guarantee the best yield, because this condition promoted low grain numbers of each panicle. The yield of IR64 was 5.85 t/ha, followed by Memberamo (5.31 t/ha), Cibodas (4.86 t/ha) and Bengawan Solo (3.32 t/ha), because the IR64 has highest panicles number and percentage of filled grains. The highest rice yield was reached using 30 cm and 40 cm row distance
