Thirty black gram genotypes were evaluated in a randomised block design with three replications during summer 1995 at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Trivandrum. Genetic analysis revealed the existence of considerable genetic variability among these genotypes. Reaction to rust disease has shown highest genotypic coefficient of variation. Leaf area index and number of pods per plant showed high estimates for both heritability and genetic advance indicating additive nature of gene action and reliability of these characters in selection. Genotypic correlation was highest between number of pods per plant and number of pod clusters per plant followed by weight of pods and grain yield per plant which implies indirect yield improvement through these characters.
