Effect of seed ageing on malate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase activity in seedling of sunflower

The specific activities of malate dehydrogenase and succinate dehydrogenase were estimated in different part of seedling of sunflower genotypes as influenced by seed ageing. Due to accelerated ageing of seeds the MDH and SDH activities decreased in both cotyledons and embryonic axis tissues of germinating seedlings of sunflower. The rate of reduction in MDH activity due to ageing was high in case of embryonic axis compared to cotyledons. The findings indicate that the seed deterioration is generally more in embryonic axis where the meristmatic cells are present. Lower activities of MDH and SDH due to acelerated ageing suggest the decreased respiratory capacity in seedling tissues resulting in poor seedling vigour in all sunflower genotypes. The estimation of these enzyme activities displayed their specificity to seed age, organ and genotype.
