Growth trend of principal crops of maharashtra : an analytical approach

Growth trend, changes in the area and productivity of principal crops for the period from 1960-61 to 1996-97 were studied for the state of Maharashtra. Both the area and productivity were found to contribute towards enhancing the production of principal crops. However, the contribution of productivity as compared to that of area was higher in increasing the production of the major crops. The highest increase (232.90 per cent) in area was noticed in sugarcane followed by 86.32 per cent increase in total cereals. Significant increase in productivity of all the principal crops was noticed during the period under study. In spite of high increase in productivity, area under some crops like kharif jowar, wheat, and rabi jowar have declined. Local seeds, infertile soil, poor agricultural technology, shortage of labour, uncertain rainfall, lack of irrigation facilities and non-availability of suitable market might have caused decrease in area under these crops. The study clearly indicates that suitable marketing infrastructure and other facilities are essential for awarding remunerative prices to the farmers to make agriculture more attractive for bringing more people to the agricultural profession which may help not only in reducing the unemployment problem to a great extent but also to increase productivity to meet to demand of the growing population in future.
