Gliocladium virens exhibited antagonistic effect against Frenchbean wilt complex pathogens viz., Sclerotium rolfsii, Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. phaseoli. Under dual culture, hyphal growth of the pathogens was inhibited at the zone of contact with the antagonist. The hyphal tips of pathogens swelled and became curved. Antagonistic hypae penetrated the hyphae penetrated the hypae of pathogens at the place of contact. G. virens produced both volatile and non-volatile metabolites which inhibited the growth of above pathogens. Among 8 fungicides evaluated in vitro, antracol was found most effective against the pathogens and non inhibitory to the antagonist, even at higher concentration of 50 g ml-1. Seed treatment with the spore mass of the antagonist at 0.1 per cent and fungicides opus, contaf and antracol (0.1%) increased percent seed germination, shoot length, vigour of the plants and number of leaves per plant under glasshouse conditions. The disease incidence was significantly reduced.
