Impact of sewage irrigation on macro - nutrient status of soils

Nutrient status of raw sewage irrigated soils of Maize Research Station, Amberpet, Hyderabad have been compared with controls. The soils are slightly alkaline in reaction. The content of organic carbon clay and silt was higher in sewage irrigated soils when compared to controls. Sand content decreased with depth whereas silt and clay content was more in subsurface horizons in both sewage irrigated and normal wter irrigated soils. The EC of sewage irrigated soils was higher than in control soils and it was more in subsurface soils. All sewage treated soils had higher content of exchangeable Ca, Mg, Na and K than non sewage irrigated soils. The available N, P and K contents were higher in sewage irrigated surface soils when compared to controls. Available N and P contents decreased with depth whereas available K content was higher in subsurface soils. The content of nutrients irrespective of depth was higher in sewage irrigated soils when compared to controls. Thus it is obvious from this study that though there has been continuous cropping on these soils, over years, the soil properties such as organic carbon, available N, P and K are at higher side. This reflects the fact that sewage water enriches the soil with organic matter and is a continuous source of essential nutrients which are required for plant growth.
