In the fertile inter-pathotype matings of M. grisea, the ascus and ascospore development was typical of any other filamentous ascomycetes producing perithecia. Asci with abnormal or aborted ascospores were frequently observed in a rice x non-rice derived perithecia. Poor viability in the ascospores of a non-rice x rice crosses and a high frequency of mature asci with more number of viable ascospores were observed in non-rice crosses. Ascosproes germinated better while inside the asci. Two crosses involving rice isolates V 28 and V 164 produced abundant perithecia and normal looking ascospores, but they failed to germinate within or outside the ascus. There was no relationship between fertility, viability and production of perithecia.
