A diallel analysis to identify general and specific ability for chlorophyll-a, b and total chlorophyll content was undertaken in a set of seven tossa jute varieteis at 45, 60, 75 and 90 days growth stages. Griffing's Methods II, Model I was employed for this purpose. GCA and SCA variances were significant at latter stages of growth. Additive and non-additive genetic variability varied at different growth stages. Total chlorophyll content showed additive gene effect at latter stages of growth whereas chlorophyll-a and chlorophyll-b had additive gene effect at 60 day stage. The cross combinations showing positive significant SCA effects involved mostly one good and one poor general combining parent. Among the seven parents Palmate leaf, Yellow leaf and ribbon leaf were found to be good general combiners.
