Growth and morphology of vegetative and reproductive branches in betelvine (Piper betle l.)

Betelvine (Piper betle L.) is a dioecious plant and produces orthotropic (vegetative) and plagiotropic (reproductive) branches. In this study, an attempt has been made to understand the differences in growth, morphology and anatomy between vegetative and reproductive branches in female and male varieties. Data indicated that the growth rates in terms of stem elongation and the number of leaves and branches produced were more in vegetative branches compared to reproductive branches. Vegetative branches also showed higher petiole and internodal lengths. However, leaf produced in reproductive branches was bigger in size. Anatomically, vegetative branches had more number of vascular bundles ranging between 17.30 and 26.20 in comparison to 10.60 and 11.20 in reproductive branches.
