Efficacy of horse gram (Dolichos Biflorus) extract on experimental urolithiasis in goats

The efficacy of supplemental horse gram (Dolichos biflorus) extract on the amelioration of ' urolithiasis in goats fed on calculogenic ration has been studied on 12 male Malabari goats "during the experiment of 84 days. Goats were divided into two groups (I and II) of 6 animals each and were fed with calculogenic ration containing 1.194% calcium, 0.0578% phosphorus and 1.202% magnesium. In addition, horse gram extract was provided at the rate of one litre per day per animal for group II. Body weight gain, dry matter intake, feed efficiency, protein efficiency and haematological parameters did not differ significantly due to dietary treatment. Supplemental horse gram extract caused significant (P 0.01) increase in serum calcium, significant (P 0.01) reduction in serum phosphorus and magnesium concentrations compared to group I. Goats in group II had significant reduction in urine calcium (P 0.05) and phosphorus (P 0.01). Supplemental horse gram extract did not show any appreciable changes in urine pH, but had increased the volume of urine. Further group II had numerous visible sand like rudimentary calculi in the kidney with gross and histopathological changes comparable to group I. The present investigation concluded that supplementation of horse gram extract had not prevented calculi formation completely but had exhibited a tendency to prevent the incidence of urinary calculi.
