Lactose pellet a novel mode of vaccine delivery to poultry birds

Although lactose pellet vaccine confers protection against ND in poultry birds, the level of protection is slightly lower than achieved through conventional method of vaccnation against ND. This finding warrants further development of ND virus vaccine delivery. It is possible to envisage pellets that also contain adtional antigens, adjuvants and substances that improve the immunogenicity of the vaccine rather than disminishes the vaccine potency. Again, in villages-skilled workers are rarely available to administer the vaccines other than oral routes. Further, a day will come when the vaccines strains of a number of pathogens could be incorporated in a single lactose pellet in an attempt to immunize the birds against many diseases at a time in foreseeable future. Secondly, if the immune response exerted by the lactose pellet vaccine is made comparable to conventional vaccine in respect to amplitude and duration of protection by concerted efforts of the researchers, this novel strategy of immunizing birds would become economical, feasible and sustainable. The poultry industry would become a profitable business and attract many unemployed persons of the society to find a way of their livelihood which in turn strengthen the Indian economy and fetch foreign exchange.
