Advantages and limitations of zero-tillage in wheat

Based on two years farmers' participatory research work, mean grain yield of wheat increased by 2.7 q/ha in the crop sown with zero-tillage machine over conventional method at farmers' field. Under on-farm trials there was an yield advantage of 4.2 q/ha in zero-tilled crop over traditional method of wheat sowing. Bulk density of soil increased from 1.5 in conventional to 1.58 g/cc in zero-till plots. Bearing capacity and soil strength increased by 50% with zero tillage technology. First flush of Phalaris minor and intensity of broad leaf weeds increased under zero-tillage conditions. The intensity of perennials like Paspalum, distichum, and Cynodon dactylon is likely to be increased in under zero-tillage condition. Due to decrease in water content and aeration in the rhizosphere, there might be a possibility of reduction in microbial population in the soil, which needs to be extrapolated.
