Germination and Dormancy by Different Seed Types of Marsh Dayflower(Aneilema keisak Hassk.)

The experiment was conducted to investigate dormancy and germination of marsh dayflower (Aneilema keisak Hassk.) showing different morphological characteristics in seed size and shape. The seeds of marsh dayflower were classified into five types based on their size, designated as E type, 2/3 type, 1/2 type, 1/3 type and S type. Germination test after stratification at low temperature for different periods of time showed that large seed such as 2/3 type and 1/2 type required significantly shorter period for dormancy breaking than small one (1/3 type and S type). Acetone treatment was more effective than concentrated sulphuric acid treatment in the dormancy breaking of marsh dayflower. Large seed treated with acetone exhibited higher germination of 67~83% while small seed showed low germination of 2~21%. Large seed was hardly affected by temperature for germination, showing germination rate of 93 to 100% at all tested temperature with exception of 30 degrees. On the contrary, small seed was more temperature sensitive and showed high germination rate of 91~94% at 25 degrees/15 degrees and 84~93% at 25 degrees as compared with large seed. Therefore, considering the characteristics of dormancy and germination, marsh dayflower seeds can be classified into two groups, large seed types(E, 2/3 and 1/2 type) and small types(S type and 1/3 type).
