Mycorrhization of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings in woody and sphagnum peat

Copmmercially produced peat is usually used as a substrate in nurseries to grow containerized seedlings. However, in constrat to peaty soils, commercial peat is biologically inactive and does not facilitate development of mycorrhiza. Mycorrhization is one of the most important quality indicators of pine seedlings. In order to develop an optimal peat substrate for production of containerized seedlings, it is necessary to investigate the effect of peat characteristics (decomposition degree and botanical composition) on the mycorrhization of seedlings. The present study compares mycorrhization of seedlings in woody and Sphagnum peat substrates. Investigations prove that seedlings in woody peat have better morphological characteristics and mycorrhiza frequency.
