Morphological assessment of 28 single parent families of seedlings of pungam (Pongamia pinnata). Seed was collected from 28 single-parent families of pungam (Pongamia pinnata) from seven biogeoclimatic zones of Tamil Nadu, India, and germinated. The seedlings were grown for six months and evaluated for stock quality via morphological parameters such as height, root length, root collar diameter, number of leaves, number of nodules and stem, leaf and root dry weights. Results showed a significant variation (p less and equal than 0.001) among different single-parent families for all of the morphological measurements made. Three new ratios, sturdiness quotient (SQ), volume index (VI) and quality index (QI), were calculated for seeding height, root collar diameter and dry weights as further tests of seedling quality. There was significant variation (p less and equal than 0.001) among the 28 single-parent families for these three ratios. A lower sturdiness quotient and higher volume and quality indices reveal the best quality of the seedling to be planted out. The single-parent family, 3 (Anaikatty, Coimbatore), recorded the lowest value (3.50) for SQ and a minimum Q1 of 1.03 and also the second highest value for VI(361.81), making it the best planting stock among the 28 tested.
