Leafminer (Liriomyza spp.): a serious threat to the vegetable industry in the Cordillera [Philippines], a model for cooperative and integrated approach in pest management

A serious outbreak of the leafminer, Liromyza spp. on potato occurred in the province of Benguet in December 1999 specifically in the municipality of Buguias forcing the Sangguniang Bayan to declare the area in the state of calamity through resolution number SB 246-99. In response, a multi-sectoral task force composed of representatives from the Department of Agriculture, the Benguet State University, the Local Government Unit, the Bureau of Plant Industry, the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority and the Crop Protection Association of the Philippines was formed to come up with sound and integrated management recommendations to combat the leafminer in a period of three months. Among the recommendations of the task force was the use of yellow sticky traps as the first line of defense, changes in cultural management practices, the use of resistant or tolerant varieties and the use of chemical pesticides
