Varietal response of foreign hybrids and local Tagnanan Tall (TAGT) to coconut leaf pruning (CLP) under the PCA-Davao Research Center condition [Philippines]

While pruning of coconut leaves (from leaf rank no. 19 and the rest below) could increase light transmission in terms of photosynthetic radiation by 28-60%, it decreased nut yield per palm for all hybrids and tall variety by 6-26% in most year. The copra weight per nut was increased by 2-9% by copra yield per palm was reduced by 3-20%. Comparing the hybrid and tall variety (Tagnanan), the former had lower yield reduction (23%) than the latter (88%). Among the hybrids, MYD x WAT was the least affected by CLP and environmental stress, i.e., drought. Leaf pruning technique did not affect the concentrations of leaf nutrients of palms, with higher leaf level of N, K, Cl, and B noted on pruned than on unpruned palms
