Recent progress of collecting and conserving diverse plant genetic resources in Myanmar

A large diversity has been suggested on plant genetic resources in Myanmar. Many indigenous landraces of crops are, however, on the verge of extinction through introduction of improved varieties and modernization in agriculture. Myanmar Seed Bank Project (JICA-MAS) has been implemented to collect, introduce, characterize, evaluate and conserve domestic and exotic plant genetic resources to ensure their future utilization. Several exploration missions are conducted for collecting rice and other cereals, food legumes and pulses, oil crops, vegetables and others together with the wild relatives. A total of 7,072 accessions belonging to 17 different crops were conserved in our Seed Bank currently. Rice and its wild relatives share about two thirds of them. Materials have been exchanged with research institutions within the country as well as those in foreign countries. Morphological and yield component data have been recorded during the cultivation for seed multiplication. Evaluation of the accessions has also been done on important characters such as disease and pest resistance. Eighteen rice accessions were found highly resistant to bacterial blight, and 9 rice accessions were highly resistant to brown planthopper. Evaluation research also revealed that 52 chickpea accessions were resistant to Fusarium wilt disease
