Effect of panicle size on grain yield in the wet season

The area planted to lowland rice in the dry season is largely limited by irrigation. Due to the looming scarcity of water, wet season (WS) rice production, therefore, may increase in relative importance. A field experiment was conducted at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) farm in the 2000 WS to determine the plant type that would be most suitable for WS conditions. Grain yield and yield components of 14 IRRI-released indica cultivars and two F1 hybrids for lowland rice were determined from a 5 sq m and a 0.48 sq m plots, respectively. Grain yield ranged from 4.5 to 7.0 t/ha. Panicle size or spikelet number/panicle ranged from 63 to 112. Grain yield was poorly correlated with panicles/sq m (r square = 0.06), % grain filling (r square = 0.07), and 1000-grain weight (r square = 0.06). However, a strong and positively significant correlation between grain yield and spikelet number/panicle (r square = 0.53*] was observed. These results indicate that large panicle size or the panicle-weight-type cultivars are more suitable for WS cultivation
