Evaluation of poultry manure as feed and residual effects of rice straw/poultry manure feeding

A series of experiments were conducted to determine accountability of dried poultry manure (DPM), the effects fo heat gtreatment on the microbiological and chemical qualities of DPM, and whether antibiotic and/or pesticide residues are present in the blood and milk of dairy animals fed with rice straw and/or DPM-containing rations. Concentrate intake of dairy cattle was significantly depressed with increased amounts of DPM in the mixture from 25 to 100 percent. With goats, intake was significantly higher at 25 percent DPM compared to 100 percent. This indicates that DPM can safely be incorporated in the ration at 25 percent without adversely affecting intake. Heating of DPM at 70 deg C for 1 day was found effective in reducing microbial content without decreasing CP content. None of the DPM and milk samples examined was positive for the level of antibiotics (chloramphenicol) and (furazolidone) tested. Similarly, no detectable residues of 3 pesticides (methyl parathion, BPMC and chlorphyrifos) were found in milk and blood samples taken.
