Variations in the yield and composition of carabao milk as affected by age, stage or lactation, and season

Individual milch carabao cows which had completed their first lactation up to the seventh were used in this study. These animals were subjected to management practices typical in the Sta Cruz-Lumban, Laguna [Philippines] "milk pockets". Yield and milk composition of 50 lactating carabaos of various ages were determined for a period of nine months to find out the effect of age, stage of lactation, and season on these parameters. The actual average milk yield (143 months of lactation) was 674.3 tins (1 tin = 0.54kg) the peak having been attained on the third month of lactation. The average lactation period was about 7 months. The peak of milk production is the age expressed as number of lactation between the second and fourth (5 to 7 years of age), as shown by the actual records and the correlation and regression analysis. The average chemical composition of carabao milk was as follows: butterfat, 6.40%; protein, 5.1%; lactose, 5.5%; ash, 0.91% total solids, 17.94% and solid non-fat, 11.50%. The effect of rainfall on milk yield showed an increase of 1.81 tins for every inch increase in rainfall. The two variates were correlated (0.66). At 5 percent level, the regression analysis for the stage of lactation in relation to yield was highly significant, but those for age on milk yield and the rainfall on milk yield were significant. For temperature, it was insignificant.
