People's knowledge and practice and Aedes aegypti infestation in Cebu City, Philippines and implications for community-based dengue control

A study on dengue was conducted in an urban poor area in T. Padilla, Cebu City, Philippines. The first objective was to describe people's knowledge, attitudes and practices towards dengue fever, transmission of the disease and preventive vector controls. The second objective was to determine the major breeding sites of Aedes aegypti larvae. It was found out that the people have a fragmentary knowledge about some aspects of the disease which may be one reason why they do not eliminate breeding sites in the community. The most common breeding sites in descending orders were tires, water puddles, barrels, plastic containers and few wells. The house index was 26.94% and Breteau Index was 36.39%. The goals of community-based dengue control and prevention programs are more likely to be attained through convergence of local government units, government organizations, people's organization and non-governmental organizations as partners in development
