Degradation of pentachlorophenol (PCP)- contaminated water using two species of bacteria

The ability of two bacterial species (Bacteria A and the Pseudomonas-like Bacteria B) to degrade pentachlorophenol (PCP) contaminated water was determined. The amount of PCP in the water samples was analyzed before and after exposure to the bacterial cultures. Bacterial growth in the cultures was likewise evaluated on four types of media. There was an increase in the number of colony forming units (CFUs) of bacterial culture B in nutrient agar alone and in the media amended with PCP. There was a 68.45% reduction in the amount of PCP after 10 days of exposure to bacterial culture. Apparently, Bacteria B had the capability to degrade PCP. On the other hand, Bacteria A could only degrade 1.14% PCP during the 10-day test period. There was a reduction in CFUs of bacterial culture A in the various nutrient-amended media
