Dried poultry manure and leucaena in rice-straw based complete feeds for dairy heifers; 2: replacement phase

Supplementary values of ipil-ipil leaf meal (ILM) and dried poultry manure (DPM) in rice straw-based complete diets were evaluated using 20 crossbred dairy heifers. Rice straw was maintained at 35% of the total dry matter diet. The concentrate portion was varied as follows: Diet 1 - 45% ILM and 20% others, Diet 2 - 30% ILM, 15% DPM and 20% others, Diet 3 - 22.5% DPM and 20% others and Diet 4 - 65% other (control). This report covers the period from breeding to calving, the continuation of Phase 1 covering yearling to breeding. In vitro digestibility was similar for all treatments with slightly better values for the control diet which had lower (P.05) dry matter, crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrient (TDN) intake. Nutrient intakes did not differ among Diet 1, 2 and 3. Average daily gain was the same for all treatments. Feed efficiency was better (P.05) with Diet 4 compared to 1 and 3; but no significant differences was found between Diets 2 and 4. All experimental heifers calved. Reproductive performance records favored Diet 2 which had 1.25 services per conception and calving age of 25.7 months; the poorest group (Diet 3) had the corresponding values of 1.25 services and 29.6 months. Under commercial scale, no differences were found in cost per unit gain. With backyard production, however, it was found much cheaper (P.05) to substitute traditional ingredients with DPM and/or ILM. Dairy replacement heifers can be fed with blended diets made up of rice straw (35%), DPM (15-22.5%) and ILM (22.5-45%). Wherever applicable and practical, the combination of 30% ILM and 15% DPM is recommended
