Study of acanthocephalan infection in the intestine of fish Parastromateus niger in relation to their histopathological changes

An attempt has been made to describe the histopathological condition in Parastromateus niger (Bloch) infected with acanthocephalan parasites belonging to species Serrasantis giganticus. This is based on observations made on the infected intestine of the fish. For this purpose several histological sections were prepared and stained by routine procedure with haematoxylin and eosin and mounted permanently in Canada balsam. Photography of selected portions of the section was carried out in support of the description presented here. The histological changes caused by acanthocephalan parasites include atrophy, caseation, necrosis of submucosal layer of intestine, infiltration of inflammatory cells at the sites of penetration of proboscis of the acanthocephalan parasite. Clogging of the villi and ulceration of mucosa with severe purulent exudate is an important finding.
