Dairy production is one of the most important enterprises for private investment in the Philippines. Statistics show that the Philippines is importing milions of pesos worth of dairy products every year. The College oF Agriculture [CA] has conducted researches on dairy production suited to the Philippine conditions. Studies were conducted on the breeding of dairy animals, feeding, raising replacements and milking procedures. An experiment on crossbreeding the Holstein with the Red Sindhi was made. These experiments aims to combine the high-milk producing ability of the Holstein with the heat-tolerant Red Sindhi. To have a better milking offspring at the least cost, frozen semen of the Holstein and Brown Swiss breeds from Cornell University [USA] was brought to the CA. The first calf in the Philippines by an artificial insemination mating was born in June, 1956. The central bull study at CA campus had semen from Red Sindhi, Brown Swiss, Holstein, and Murrah buffaloes. The cost of feeds is one of the big items in the cost of production. It may range from 50-75 percent of the total cost. The ration used by CA utilizes mainly local feeds. The ingredients are fine rice bran, copra meal, corn gluten feed, molasses, yellow corn, soybean oil meal, salt, and ground shells. The calculated digestible protein of the usual ration is 15% and the total digestible nutrients make up 74%. Dairy animals are also given grains and roughages. In raising replacements for the herd, some management done for the dairy calves are pail-feeding, limited milk feed, dehorning and deworming. In the process of milking cows and carabaos by the hand, it is good practice to remove the first few stream from each of the teats. This will materially removed the bacterial count of the milk. When milking machines are used, forestripping eliminates high bacterial counts streams. The used of small top pails and the thorough cleaning before milking the animals, especially the carabaos which love to wallow in mud, will certainly improved the quality of milk
