Biological control of Fusarium wilt of abaca (Fusarium oxysporum Fsp. cubense Snyd. & Hans.) with Trichoderma and yeast

The potential of Trichoderma and yeast for the biological control agent against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Snyd. & Hans), causing wilt of abaca was first evaluated in the laboratory by dual culture method whereby the pathogen and each of the bioagents were co-inoculated in pairs over the agar surface 5 cm apart from one another. Based on their ability to inhibit growth of the pathogen, Trichoderma viride and yeast (Davao isolate) were the most antagonistic. Inoculation experiment using potted abaca plants showed remarkable reduction of wilt disease severity in the antagonist-treated plants. Control of the disease provided by T. viride and yeast was equivalent to 81.76 and 82.52 percent respectively over the control treatment. Time of application did not significantly affect the efficacy of the bioagents in providing control of the plants against Fusarium wilt disease.
