Development of integrated corn livestock farming systems for smallhold corn farmer

Corn farmers in San Jose, Mindoro and Calabanga, Camarines Sur [Philippines] served as farmer-partners for the integrated corn livestock farming system project. Using the recommended cultural management practices of corn production, on-farm trials on varietal; fertilizer; Integrated Pest Management; and tillage management practices were done. At different stages of corn production such as baby corn, green corn and grain corn, farmers can derive income and generate good quality feedstuffs for livestock production. To conserve the corn stovers for future feedstuffs of livestock, production of hay and silage were demonstrated to the farmers. These feedstuffs were relished by the cattle and carabao in the area for the acceptability feeding test. Projections were shown to the farmers on the number of animals that may be supported by corn forage materials at different stages of growth. Based on the results, development of an integrated corn livestock farming systems for smallhold farmers is being proposed. However, smallhold farmers need to be organized to share resources with one another for a viable community-based corn livestock integration
