Analysis of the mating system of genetically multi-ancestor (GMA) coconut variety using microsatellite markers

Development of Genetically Multi-Ancestors (GMA) coconut farmers' variety by PCA-ZRC [Philippine Coconut Authority-Zamboanga Research Center] was proposed as an alternative coconut breeding program to hybrid breeding. Evaluation of the mating system of GMA was carried out to ensure the attainment of the objectives in generating coconut variety that has greater genetic variability and balanced heterozygosity. Microsatellites markers were found powerful in estimating the mating system parameters of GMA. GMA has mixed-mating system where multilocus outcrossing occured at a high rate in the amount of 91.2%. However, the correlation of outcrossed paternity was 73.7% of the outcrossing events, i.e. most of the outcrossing was full-sib mating. The neighborhood size was one palm. Inbreeding took form as selfing (8.8%) and biparental inbreeding (11.1% to 12.1%). The multilocus outcrossing rates of the F1 tall x tall hybrids that composed the GMA population ranged from 89.9% to 93.1%. The use of five unlinked SSRs loci namely CN2A4, CNZ51, CNZ21, CNZ09, CN1C6 resulted in the highest outcrossing rate, i.e. 92.1%. The first random mating of GMA population has not resulted in the balanced heterozygosity level of the population
