Nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) in different organs of perennial rice with rhizomes under upland and irrigated conditions

The concentration of sugar and starch in leaves, stems, roots and rhizomes was examined and changes observed in sugar and starch concentration in these organs under upland and irrigated conditions were compared in perennial upland rice with rhizome. Results showed that the leaves had the highest sugar concentration, whereas the roots had the lowest. The difference in sugar concentration was twice that between the lowest and highest values in leaves, stems and rhizomes. However, no significant difference in sugar concentration in roots was noted among all plant materials. The rhizomes had the highest, whereas both roots and leaves had the lowest starch concentration. Starch content of rhizomes significantly differed among plant materials. The maximum starch content in rhizomes of SL3-13-13 (16.9%) was about four times that of the minimum (52-30-4) of the F1 (4.4%). It has been shown that rhizomes are important storage organs and that storage ability differs among varieties. Almost all plant materials had higher sugar content under irrigated than under upland conditions. However, the opposite was true in starch content, which was lower under irrigated than under upland conditions. The starch content of rhizomes under upland condition was more than twice that under irrigated condition at flowering stage. These results imply that upland conditions may increase carbohydrate metabolism and accumulation in shoots and rhizomes. The carbohydrate metabolism of upland perennial rice with rhizome is discussed
