Quantitative variations induced by gamma irradiation and gibberellic acid in M1 generation of chickpea

In a study three chickpea genotypes having different seed coat colour viz., Noor 91 (white), Punjab 91 (brown) and C141 (black) were irradiated with 40, 50 and 60 Kr of gamma rays separately and simultaneously with gibberellic acid (GA3) to study the magnitude of induced variations in various traits. Gamma irradiation decreased all the characters (plant height, number of primary and secondary branches, pods/plant, seeds/pod, 100-seed weight, harvest index, grain and biological yield) except days to flowering and maturity in Punjab 91 and C 141. However, in Noor 91 increase over control was recorded for the plant height, number of primary branches and days to flowering and maturity. Post mutagenic application of GA3 changed the effects of gamma irradiation either in positive or negative direction differentially in the three genotypes. A sufficient genetic variability was induced for all the characters with both the mutagenic treatments. High heritability (broadsense) was observed for all the traits with gamma irradiation in the three genotypes. Combined treatment in Noor 91 considerably decreased the heritability for plant height and for grain yield, in Punjab 91 for the number of primary branches and in C 141 for the days to maturity. Heritability for secondary branches, pods per plant and harvest index accompanied with a high magnitude of genetic variability and genetic advance in the three genotypes.
