Thirty-three isolates of Macrophomina phaseolina were tested for their pathogenic and cultural variations sunflower variety Cargil Hybrid SF-100. Isolates varied greatly in their virulence. Isolates MP-29 AND MP-47 the most virulent -and isolates MP-28 and MP-46, the least 7 virulent. Macrophomina isolates showed three of colony growth viz. dense, feathery and restricted suggesting that the isolates differed in their ability to use certain nitrogenous compounds. Such differences reflect metabolic abilities that could lead to host specialization in this genus.
