Leachate water composition and chemical properties of salt-affected soils treated with gypsum

A laboratory study was conducted to compare the effect of gypsum applied alone or in combination with farmyard manure (FYM) on the composition of leachate water and soil exchange complex. Gypsum application increased the electrical conductivity (EC) of leachate over control. Maximum EC value of leachate was observed where gypsum, according to 100% of gypsum requirement (GR), was mixed in the upper layer as compared to whole layer mixing. Gypsum application decreased CO3 and HCO3 and increased Na concentration of leachate. Leaching with distilled water for five days showed that whole layer mixing was beneficial in reducing pH and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) in Gajiana (cultivated) soil series, as compared to the Firoze and Gajiana (uncultivated) soil series. Mixing of gypsum, according to 100% of GR, in the upper layer proved effective for improving chemical properties of these soils whereas application of gypsum according to 50% of GR along with FYM (2g/100g soil) was less effective.
