Biology of rice green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens (Distant) under laboratory conditions

Biology of rice green leafhopper, Nephotettix virescens (Distant) was studied at 24 degree / 16 degree centigrade, 28 degree / 20 degree centigrade, 32 degree / 24 degree centigrade and 36 degree / 28 degree centigrade day/night temperatures and 70% RH. Different stages of the insect have been described. Its incubation period was longest (16.5 plus minus 0.99 days) at 24 degree / 16 degree centigrade and decreased drastically (8.7 plus minus 0.98 days) at 28 degree / 20 degree centigrade. The developmental period of different nymphal instars of both males and females was longest at 24 degree / 16 degree centigrade and decreased with increase in temperature. Nymphal developmental period and adult life of females were comparatively longer than those of males at each temperature. Pre-oviposition and oviposition periods were longest at 24 degree /16 degree centigrade and shortest at 36 degree / 28 degree centigrade. The eggs were deposited in a row inside the slit made by the dagger like ovipositor of the female. Fecundity per female was lowest at 24 degree / 16 degree centigrade and increased with the increase in temperature from 24 degree / 16 degree centigrade to 32 degree /24 degree centigrade but it reduced with further increase in temperature.
