Effect of age of developing kernel on germination and dormancy in sunflower

Dormancy is an important factor influencing seed quality. Germination potential of sunflower hybrid Hysun-33 was studied at different stages from 2-40 days after anthesis initiation (DAAI) with an interval of two days. Each seed lot was subjected to Post Harvest Storage (PHS) levels of 5, 15,25,35,45, and 75 days. No germination was found in the seed lots harvested 2-10 DAAI at any PHS level. At PHS levels of 5 and 15 days, no germination was found even in the seed lots harvested at 12, 14 and 16 DAAI. The highest germination potential at 5, 15, 25, 35, 45 and 75 days of PHS levels was in 40 DAAI (58.25%), 36 DAAI (86%), 34 DAA1 (92.50%), 40 DAAI (90%), 36 DAAI (83.75%) and 40 DAAI (97.75%) respectively. Lack of germination in 2-10 DAAI harvested seed lots may be attributed to under developed embryo and high concentration of abscisic acid (ABA). With increase in the age of kernel after fertilization, changes take place leading to improvement in germination whether the seed is on mother plant or in store.
