Sustainable dryland wheat production through green manuring
1999
Siwale, J.
Soils in Northern Zambia are very leached and their pH is very low, 4.5 (CaC12). Wheat varieties tolerant to aluminum toxicity have been developed. To enhance the' productivity of these varieties, appropriate crop production technologies need to be used. One of these technologies is the use of legume green manures. A green manure trial was conducted for three years at Katito Wheat Research Farm in Mbala. Sunnhemp and velvet bean green manures were compared with a weedy fallow and with continuous wheat. Significant yield increases were obtained from the use of green manures over the weedy fallow and continuous wheat.
