Chemical composition of transgenic and izogenic maize grain

Nutrition of animals is confronted with feeds processed by gene technologies during the last years. Therefore it is important for the nutrition of animals to observe the equivalence of substances at changes caused by these technologies which are not connected with substances contained in feeds (comparison of transgenic with isogenic feeds). We compared the chemical composition of maize corn of the variety Prelud (Zea Mays L.) with the genetically modified Bt-maize of the same initial line and the feed mixtures for pigs containing 70% isogenic or transgenic maize. The initial line was changed by introduction of the gene for Bt-toxin (CryIA (b)-delta-endotoxin-gene from Bacillus thuringiensis) which protects maize against the leaf roller-moth. We noticed larger changes neither in Bt-maize nor in the feed mixture with Bt-maize in substances contained in feeds (organic nutrients, amino acids). Certain significant differences were noticed in the content of fat, ash and NDF. However, they are within the normal span of these substances in grain maize.
