In 1986 and 1988-1991, cob weight and the number of plants infested by the European corn borer, (Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn.) on successively planted maize was observed in south western part of Slovakia, where O. nubilalis is univoltine. Five maize hybrids were involved in the study. High number of damaged plants was observed when maize was sown early (the second half of April and first half of May). Damage of the plants was low when maize was sown late (in second half of May). In 1986, average cob weight of maize planted late was similar as cob weight of maize planted early or in optimum date. But in the years 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1991 average cob weight of maize planted late was lower than cob weight from maize planted on early and optimum date. And more, cobs were not fully developed. This study showed that if maize is planted very late, the yield is uncertain (hazard) in Slovakia. Loss of yield caused by late sowing is usually higher than profit achieved by avoiding of high pest occurrence
