The paper evaluates the present state in sheep breeding of the SR. At January 1, 2000, 340,3 thousand sheep were bred in the SR. The average sheep performance is low. Only 0.5 per cent of sheep is machine-milked. Breed herds are largely unprofitable. The EU import concession quotas are met only in part. Among the vital objectives set by the concept of further development of this sub-sector to be met by the year 2000 are: increase of export of sheep products, especially lambs for slaughter. According to the projection scenarios, it is important to: attain 120-130 per cent fertility, cheese production per milked ewe ranging between 21 and 23 kg; sheep population between 400 and 500 thousand, machine-milking of 25 per cent of the number of milked ewes, and breeding profitability between 6 and 8 per cent (depending on the breeding production profile); to increase the share of paddock grazing and enhance its positive environmental impact. The proliferation of sheep breeding offers more jobs, especially in marginal areas, however, state subsidies are needed
