Giant gourami cage culture in Sagaegrung river, Uthaithani province

Cage grown giant gourami in Sagaegrung river, Uthaithani, were fed either floating catfish pellet, floating herbivorous fish pellet or Ipomoea spp. (vegetable) to determine the feasibility of commercial scale fish culture. Giant gourami with averaging 6.9+-0.4 g/f were stocked in 5x5x2 cubic m cages at rate of 50 fish/cubic m. The fish were fed the experimental feed to apparent satiation times daily for 8 months. The result showed that final weight, feed conversion ratio, survival rate and production of fish fed catfish pellet, herbivorous fish pellet and vegetable were 298.69+-29.65, 121.10+-11.32, 58.07+-3.42 g/f; 1.13+-0.19, 2.25+-0.40, 1.23+-0.04; 95.92+-3.34, 75.95+-3.29, 73.84+-3.19 percent and 358.25+-31.86, 115.00+-8.25, 53.50+-5.25 kg/cage respectively. Protein and digestible energy of catfish pellet, herbivorous fish pellet and vegetable were 24.08 percent and 236.86 kcal/100 g; 18.27 percent and 206.54 Kcal/100 g and 3.27 percent and 30.22 kcal/100 g, respectively. The highest profit margin (17,255.30 B/cage or 48.17 B/kg) was obtained from feeding fish with catfish pellet. Loss of 333.65 and 2,777.63 B/cage was reported for those fed herbivorous fish feed and vegetable.
