Soil, water and fertilizer management for corn production in paddy soils

In order to obtain appropriate technologies for corn production in paddy soil in dry season, five experiments concerning with varieties, soil, water and fertilizer managements were conducted at Phitsanulok Field Crops Experiment Station, Wangthong, Phitsanulok. These experiments were conducted on both sandy clay loam and clay soils during December 1995 to May 1997. The results indicated that hybrid corn could be grown in paddy soil after rice and gave a satisfactory benefit return. Tilled soil was beneficial as compared to no tilled soil particularly on sandy clay loam soil. For both soil types, high yield corn production could be obtained with irrigation at either 7 or 14-day intervals. The performances of corn varieties appeared to depend upon soil types. Under sandy clay loam soil, high yielding varieties were Ciba Geigy 5445, Cargill 727 and DK 888. Under clay soil, grain yields of DK 888, Suwan 3701, Pioneer 3011 and Ciba Geigy 5449 were not statistically different. The deep placement of nitrogen fertilizer was not necessary for corn production in sandy clay loam soil. Nitrogen fertilizer at the rate of 19.2 kgN/rai was recommended for corn production in paddy soil on both sandy clay loam and clay soils.
