Development of postharvest technology for export of rambutans: I. Postharvest quality and losses of Rongrein rambutan fruits in wholesale markets

Postharvest quality and losses of 'Rongrein' rambutan fruits in Bangkok wholesale markets were surveyed during early season and mid-season in 1990 and 1991. The results showed that wholesale markets had more green-yellow rambutan fruits with smaller size, less total soluble solids and greater titratable acidity during early season and had more red rambutan fruits with larger size, greater total soluble solids and less titratable acidity during mid-season. Postharvest losses of rambutan fruits in wholesale markets during the early season were greater than that of mid-season in 1990, while postharvest losses of rambutan fruits during early season and mid-season in 1991 were slightly different. Postharvest losses of rambutan fruits caused by disease, mealy bug and physical damage were 0.15-2.44, 3.30-11.40 and 7.31-41.58 percent, respectively. Skin blemish (black scar) and browning spinterns were the major contribution to the loss of 'Rongrein' rambutan fruits during 1990 and 1991, respectively.
