Chromosome numbers of 10 species of the family Zingiberaceae in Phuphan National Park were determined in root tips. The best metaphases were photographed using phase contrast microscope at 1000 times magnification. All species are identified in 3 tribe, including Alpinieae (1 genus), Hedychieae (3 genera) and Zingibereae (2 genera). The somatic chromosome numbers of all the species studies were found to be as follows: Amomum uliginosum Kaenig 2n=48, Boesenbergia xiphostachy Loes 2n=20, Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. 2n=84, C. parviflora Wall. 2n=26, C. alismatifolia Gagnep. 2n=32, C. thorelii Gagnep. 2n=34, C. gracillima Gagnep. 2n=24, Kaempferia rotunda Linn. 2n=22, K. laotica Gagnep. 2n=22, Zingiber purpureum Roscoe 2n=22 and Z. zerumbet (Linn.) Sm. 2n=22. However, the somatic chromosome numbers of genus Curcuma from this study can identified to species. The somatic chromosome numbers of genus Kaempferia and Zingiber are equal (2n=22).
