Assessment of water resources potential in upper northeastern region of Thailand

Northeastern region of Thailand is the poorest region in the country due to lack of sufficient water resources development. This causes a severe problem of immigration of local people to Bangkok. The study aims to assess water resources potential in the upper Northeastern region of Thailand for water resources development and planning in the next decade in order to improve the living condition. The methodology consists of firstly the study of hydrological characteristics of the basin in order to determine annual yield of the basin. The basin is divided into 38 sub-basins. Secondly all existing water resources development projects including small, medium and large scale water resources projects are considered as water sources at present. Then the present water demand in each sub-basin is evaluated for various uses such as for irrigation, domestic, industry and hydro-power. The projection of water demand in each aspect is assessed for the next decade according to the National Economic and Social Development Plan. Finally, evaluation of the potential of all existing water resources projects is done compared to the future demands. It is revealed that implementation of more water resources projects is necessary in order to meet the future demand. Almost all sub-basins are found to have enough water resources potential for such water requirement. However, for the basins where water resources are fully exploited, transfer of water from the other basins is also an alternative.
