[Diesel fuel from rapeseed]
2000
Semenov, V.H. | Kuchta, V.H.
The article deals with the technology of obtaining the diesel fuel from the rapeseed. As estimated, about 90 % of mechanical energy used by mankind is known to be produced by internal-combustion engines (ICE). While producing about 3 mln. tonnes of oil and 1.5 mln. tonnes of gas condensate, Ukraine is additionally supplied by 11 mln. tonnes from Russia and Kazakhstan. While analysing the possibilities of using the various kinds of alternative fuel in the ICE, the special attention is paid to the fuel from renewable raw materials resources. Based on the analysis, it was determined that for Ukraine's conditions the fuel obtained from rape oil is promising. Over the years 1998-2000 the rapeseed production in Ukraine increased by about 7 times and nowadays stands at 150,000 tonnes. The special attention is attracted by industrial rapeseed which may be a source for oil methyl ethers as binar fuels obtained through the etherification to be used as ICE fuel. Ukraine's annual demand for diesel fuel totals about 3,000,000 tonnes. To provide such amount of the fuel while harvesting the yield 0.6 tonnes per hectare the area 5.0-5.5 mln. hectares is to be sown, that is 17 % of Ukraine's arable lands. The comparative data are tabulated on traditional oil as well as alternative fuels
